Halloween today is rooted in the Celtic people, a people who lived more than 2,000 years ago on what is now England, Ireland and Northern France. The Celtic people began the new year on November 1 of the solar calendar. A festival is celebrated on the eve of the New Year to honor the deceased leader, Samhain. This festival day signals the beginning of the cold season, the days of darkness often associated with the decline and death of humankind. The Celtic people believed that Samhain allowed the souls of the dead to return home to earth on that night.
